Learn to Crew Class, 2025

Saturday & Sunday for 2 Weeks
May 31, June 01, 07, 08
0800 – 1600 hrs

The St. Croix Sailing Club is offering a class this spring in the basics of sailing and crewing on a variety of racing sailboats. This class is taught by Capt. Tim Tyre, see his bio here.

This class is for you if you have had some boating experience and are interested in learning about sailboat racing.  The best way to get started in sailboat racing is by crewing!  The class includes four days of instruction designed to help sailors develop the proficiencies necessary to become confident crew on racing sailboats.  Class time will be split evenly between in-class instruction and on-the-water practice.

Each of the four class days will include classroom instruction from 8:00 until noon followed by on-the-water practice (weather permitting) until around 4:00 p.m.  Lunch will be provided each day.

A 60-page handbook will be yours to keep. Morning classroom sessions include the basics of sailboat racing and crewing:

  • Terminology
  • Knot-tying
  • Skippers’ expectations
  • Race starts
  • Sails and trim
  • Strategy and tactics

Each afternoon you and your fellow class members will be assigned to a variety of boats to practice race maneuvers with experienced skippers and crew.

The Learn to Crew Class also includes a one-year “Crew Membership” in the St. Croix Sailing Club.  You are encouraged to attend all St. Croix Sailing Club social and sailing events.  An upgrade to “Regular Membership” is available – this level of membership applies to everyone in your household!

Early Bird Pricing:  $495 per person (with Crew membership) or $605 per person (with Regular membership).
After May 18th:  $525/$635, respectively.

This two-weekend class will be held at the St. Croix Marina in Hudson.

Prerequisite: Although no sailing experience is necessary, you must be comfortable on boats, particularly in wavy conditions.

Disclaimer: This class does not guarantee a crew position on a race boat for the remainder of the sailing season, as all race competition in the St. Croix Sailing Club is among privately-owned boats.  This class does guarantee a great way to learn how a racing crew works and will help you to build both sailing skills and social connections within our sailing community.

ASA-101 Adult Keelboat Certification, 2025

ASA-101 is a beginner course for adult sailors with no previous experience, taught by certified American Sailing Association instructors. The boats used for ASA-101 are weighted-keel sloop-rigged sailboats, at 22 feet in length. After your ASA-101 certification, you’ll know what all of that means. For now, just know that they are very stable and safe and perfect for someone with no experience. This is the best course for any adult interested in sailing. By the end of the course you’ll be able to comfortably sail your own vessel up to 27′ in length, or serve as crew on a sailing vessel.

Each class meets for four sessions; 3 or 4 hours each day, with a test at the conclusion of the final day.  Each class is three students, led by an onboard instructor. All students must bring a copy of ASA’s text “Sailing Made Easy” which is available from the American Sailing Association’s website at https://store.asa.com/asa-101-sailing-made-easy-textbook/.  Please review the textbook prior to your lesson.

Included with your registration are:

  • A membership with the American Sailing Association
  • Official ASA Logbook
  • ASA-101 certification for those who successfully complete the course
  • An Associate membership with the St. Croix Sailing Club

Students must be at least 18 years of age.

There is a weight limit of 250lbs per person for this class.  Our goal is to add an adaptive sailing program so everyone can enjoy the sport of sailing.

Students must also bring appropriate gear and clothing for sailing:  a life-jacket, non-marking shoes, sailing gloves (suggested), and to dress for the weather.  A more detailed list will be provided by your instructor.

Additional dates are expected to be added in mid-May for classes in July.
